When you invest in a tiny bottle of liquid gold, you expect it to last forever. But did you know that simply leaving it on your sunny dresser gradually kills the scent?
Premium Attars are natural masterpieces of life, with the plant essence captured in a perfect oil distillation. In contrast to alcohol-based perfumes, biological processes (versus chemical stabilization) produce a living attar like Kannauj Attars. Attar can be treated like the "Crown Jewels" they are, and the notes within will not flatten out.
Here's how to extend the life of your attars and keep them as intoxicating 10 years from now as they are today.
How to extend the life of your attars
1. The Sunlight Sabotage: Why Dark is Divine
It is not dramatic. Light is the enemy of aroma. UV rays destroy the molecular bond of premium oils.
- What you probably didn't know: Even 15 minutes of direct sunlight can create a chemical reaction that turns a magnificent Kesar Chandan into something unimaginable.
- To prevent this: Ditch the open finished or glass case. Store your attars in their original heavy wooden box or in an opaque disk for a dedicated place to store them. Think of it as a vault with a velvet lining to protect your fragrance treasures. Â
2. The Breath of Death: Seal it or Lose it
Premium Attars are concentrated so much that they are extremely thirsty for oxygen, leading to the effect of oxidation, which steals away the top notes of your fragrance.
- The Surprise: Not only does an open bottle let the fragrance evaporate, but the air that is coming into the bottle is also causing the loss of the very top notes of the scent's DNA. Thus, the fragrance could, in all likelihood, take on some very sour or metallic odors.
- The Fix: After every single spray you make from any screw cap or glass stopper bottle, please make sure the bottle is completely sealed. In a traditional crystal bottle, check the seal frequently.
3. Prevent the Scent From Being Contaminated
Most people do not think of their attars as being like a sponge, but since attars are oils from nature, they very easily absorb unwanted scents.
- The Surprise: If you store your beautiful Rose Attar bottle next to your detergent or next to your air freshener, you will eventually find that a year or two from now, your attar will begin to inhale those chemicals.
- The Fix: Store your attar collection ONLY in a neutral environment. Do not store your attar collection in the bathroom (a hot, humid place) or kitchen (very strong cleaning smells).
4. Shake (Gently) Your Bottles to Wake Them
Because much of the work done in India by perfumers is done using traditional distillation techniques without the use of synthetic emulsifiers. There will be times when heavy, resinous molecules (like Oud) will settle to the bottom while lighter, floral notes settle at the top.
- The Surprise: The last 2ml of your bottle could smell totally different than the first if you don't "rotate" your collection.Â
- The Fix: Don't leave them sitting like a museum exhibit, wear them! Gently tilt/rotate the bottle before applying to remix the soul of your fragrance.
